Soft, moist, and loaded with gooey chocolate chips, these Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Muffins turn classic banana bread into the perfect bakery-style handheld treat. Made with ripe bananas, buttermilk, brown sugar, and a mix of dark and milk chocolate, they are fluffy in the middle with tall golden muffin tops and melted chocolate in every bite.
The secret to their beautiful rise is a simple two-temperature baking method. The muffins start in a hot oven at 225 °C to create that high, domed top, then the temperature drops to 180 °C to finish baking the centers without drying them out. No need to open the oven when changing the temperature — just turn it down and let the muffins continue baking.

What Are Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Muffins?
Chocolate chip banana bread muffins are everything you love about a soft, sweet banana loaf, baked into individual muffin portions. Ripe mashed bananas add natural sweetness, moisture, and a tender texture, while the chocolate chips melt into little pockets throughout the batter.
Unlike a traditional loaf, muffins bake more quickly and develop a slightly crisp golden top with a soft, fluffy center. They are ideal for breakfast, packed lunches, afternoon coffee, meal prep, or a quick sweet snack whenever you are craving something homemade.
Important Note
Do not open the oven after the first 4 minutes. Simply reduce the temperature from 225 °C to 180 °C and continue baking with the oven door closed. Opening the oven too early can affect the rise and may cause the muffin tops to sink.
Use ripe bananas for the best results. They should be soft with lots of brown spots on the peel. Underripe bananas will not mash as smoothly and will not provide the same sweetness or deep banana flavor.

Serving Suggestion
Serve these muffins slightly warm so the chocolate chips are soft and melty. They are delicious with coffee, tea, cold milk, or a creamy latte. For a more indulgent serving, spread a little salted butter over a warm muffin or add a spoonful of Greek yogurt and fresh berries on the side.
These banana bread muffins are also perfect for brunch boards, bake sales, weekend breakfasts, or as an easy homemade gift for friends and family.
Pro Tips for the Perfect Tostadas
Use Very Ripe Bananas – Soft bananas with brown or nearly black peels create the sweetest and most flavorful muffins.
Mash the Bananas Well – A few small chunks are fine, but mash them mostly smooth so the batter stays even.
Do Not Overmix – Once the flour is added, stir only until no dry flour remains. Overmixing can make muffins dense.
Fill the Cups Generously – Fill each muffin liner about three-quarters full for tall, rounded tops.
Top with More Chocolate – Press a few extra chocolate chips onto each muffin before baking for a bakery-style finish.
Cool Before Storing – Let the muffins cool fully on a wire rack before placing them in a container. This prevents condensation and keeps the tops from becoming sticky.

Ingredients
260 g all-purpose flour
2 medium eggs
2 ripe bananas
200 g white sugar
50 g brown sugar
Vanilla extract
100 g buttermilk
100 g neutral oil
2 tsp baking soda
8 g baking powder
80 g dark chocolate chips
70 g milk chocolate chips
Pinch of salt
Extra chocolate chips, for topping
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 225 °C. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with muffin liners.
Step 2: Mash the bananas
Add the ripe bananas to a large bowl and mash them until mostly smooth. A few small banana pieces are completely fine.

Step 3: Mix the wet ingredients
Add the eggs, white sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, buttermilk, and oil to the mashed bananas. Whisk until smooth and fully combined.
Step 4: Combine the dry ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Step 5: Make the muffin batter
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Fold gently with a spatula until just combined and no visible flour remains. Do not overmix.
Step 6: Add the chocolate chips
Fold in the dark chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Step 7: Fill the muffin liners
Divide the batter between the 12 muffin liners, filling each one around three-quarters full. Top with a few additional chocolate chips.

Step 8: Bake with a temperature drop
Bake the muffins at 225 °C for 4 minutes. Without opening the oven door, reduce the temperature to 180 °C and bake for another 15 minutes, or until the muffin tops are golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean.
Step 9: Cool the muffins
Let the muffins cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Transfer them to a wire rack and allow them to cool completely before storing.
FAQ
Yes! You can swap every ingredient out to a vegan alternative for it to be vegan friendly!
Store the fully cooled muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Place a sheet of paper towel or parchment in the container if you want to absorb excess moisture and keep the tops fresh. For longer storage, freeze the muffins in a sealed freezer bag for up to 2 months.
Warm one muffin in the microwave for around 10–15 seconds until soft and slightly warm. You can also reheat them in an oven at 160 °C for around 5 minutes. If frozen, let the muffins thaw at room temperature first or microwave them on a lower setting until warmed through.
